The therapeutic benefits of open water swimming

For those that are willing and physically able, there may be significant mental health benefits to a regular dip in the open water.

Open water swimming can provide a sense of connection with the environment, it can help participants engage with their own sense of play, it may help to allow difficult emotions to emerge in a manageable way, to provide a sense of connection between mind and body and - imporantly - help to nurture an acceptance of the world as it is rather than as we would like it to be.

Brighton Counselling therapist Sam Milford undertook a research project to explore the ways in which open water swimming resonates with the process of psychotherapy. His results were featured in the June 2021 issue of Therapy Today - a subject that you can explore further with him if this is something that interests you.
